As I often say, no two shows are the same. This was especially different for me, as it was my first time to play with “The Fox.” This is the name that has worked out best so far. Normally we are Felix and Fingers, but when Emily joined the organization, we knew we’d need a name that started with an “F” for a female.
After some votes over Chicago Star 105.5 FM Radio, she temporarily became “The Fox” and perhaps that is the name we will use permanently.
But to the point – this was a unique show. Modine Manufacturing had asked for two hours of background music before we started the dueling pianos. We played jazz standards for an hour and a half and DJ’d for a short while as we had a quick dinner break.
Now I had never heard The Fox sing jazz. And I just recently learned from her that it is one of her favorite genres of music to sing. From the first note that left her golden vocal chords, I was blown away. Not only did she sing with sultry, expressive, and beautiful tone, she even busted into a scat at one point.
I was completely blown away, and I think many of the guests were just as delighted with her performance.
Trattoria di Carlo Catering
I may be wrong on how this works. But I believe Trattoria di Carlo was either the banquet that we played in, or it is a separate restaurant that provided the catering. Either way, the food and presentation was delicious. I don’t want to give to much credit to the chocolate fountain, because everything was so delicious, but I did take a picture of it, because I honestly wanted to dive into it. Haven’t decided if I mean that figuratively or literally.
…And The Dueling Begins
The dueling piano portion of the night also introduced me to a ‘first.’ We accepted song requests via Twitter, as well as on paper. In the past, we have always used paper and pencils and shout-outs, but we like to be fresh and introduce new ideas that work. Twitter certainly provided an easy alternative for the crowd to request their favorite music. There was such a large number of songs that came in, and we did not waste any time playing any of our own favorite selections. It was entirely crowd selections, which is great, because then we don’t have to start off guessing what they might enjoy.
What I have found in my experience, is that the best selections are always their selections. What I mean by that is, even if I have a song that I play really well, it would probably not be received as well as a crowd selection that was done at a less-practiced level. But that is not to say any part of the performance was mediocre by any means.
We kept the energy high, engaged with the crowd, and their were plenty of smiles to go around all night. We really enjoyed Modine Manufacturing and thank them for having us for their corporate entertainment.
