This August, Mike Sherman and I visited one of the most unique wedding venues in the country, Maxwell Mansion of Lake Geneva, to play what could only be a gorgeous wedding at a place like that! As we well know, though, the unexpected just loves to make an appearance at special events. That night the weather literally said 0% chance of rain, and while it may not have been a monsoon (darn it if I don’t love wordplay) it did end up raining for hours that night. Luckily, Felix and Fingers always comes equipped with a backup plan.

When we first arrived in Lake Geneva, the first order of business was to figure out where the ceremony was to be held. After all, it looked like there was potential for rain, which would affect the location of the ceremony and therefore, where to set up our equipment. Of course, the first people we ran into were Jonathan and Anna of Anna Page Photography. At weddings, we like to think of all the vendors there with us as part of our team- after all, we all have the same goal of creating an amazing day for the bride and groom! As a husband and wife team, Jonathan and Anna were acutely aware of each element of a successful wedding. We were happy to have them on our team that day!
Ceremony at the Baker House
Little known fact about Felix and Fingers: the Baker House in Lake Geneva was one of the first places our original “Felix” and “Fingers” played dueling pianos together! After some debate, it was decided the ceremony was to take place outside, and though the weather reports indicated it was very unlikely (if not impossible) it would rain, we looked to the sky nervously as we set up our equipment on their beautiful front lawn. Luckily, the equipment we set up for their guest musicians and our “DJ tent” all ended up okay for the duration of the ceremony, and thank goodness! The lake offered a beautiful backdrop for their ceremony.
Party at the Maxwell Mansion
Then came time for us to pack up and get over to the Maxwell Mansion for the cocktail hour, dinner and reception. Everything was set to take place outside, with the dinner in a tent in the front yard and everything else in the uniquely decorated backyard. As the weather reports promised to keep the rain at bay, we went ahead and set up our equipment (lights, speakers, shells and all) outside. About halfway through dinner, we noticed that it was in fact starting to rain… right before speeches.
As they needed our microphone and sound system for this and the dancing was set to start almost immediately after speeches, Mike orchestrated the speeches inside the dinner tent while I rushed (with the help of the amazing staff at the Maxwell Mansion) to get the equipment set up inside the Mansion in such a manner that it looked like it was supposed to be there all along.
Teamwork Makes the Dream Work
A lot of moving parts are required to create a successful wedding, and Anna Page Photography, Felix and Fingers and the Maxwell Mansion worked together to make that reception a nonstop dance party regardless of the rain!
