If you’re doing in Gatsby theme or decorating for the roaring 20’s, it’s sometimes a bit difficult picking the right music. Our event at the Abbey in Fontana Wisconsin though had it figured out!
Great Gatsby Theme
Music from the 20’s, though very important about 100 years ago, is much less well known at this point. So the question is always, “what kind of music do I have at a roaring 20’s party”? When popular music just doesn’t fit, and even the Frank Sinatra favorites don’t exist for another 30 years, what does that leave without hiring a Duke Ellington style big band? We like to recommend a little of each…at the same time…
There’s a well know cover band in YouTube land known as Postmodern Jukebox, who can arguably be credited with making popular the concept of mixing modern tunes with old musical styles. Imagine Lady Gaga as a ragtime. Paula Abdul as a foxtrot. Michael Jackson using stride piano. That’s what they do, and what we also learned to perform.
Roaring 20’s by Lake Geneva
The Abbey is a highly requested venue in Fontana Wisconsin and a great place for a wedding, or in this case, a corporate event. Our job was to cover this new-meets-old style of music while the guests ate dinner. Decked out in flapper dresses and fedoras, this is my type of event!
20’s Music and the Gatsby Band
We set up this show as a quintet. With a female vocalist fronting the band, I put together a piano/bass/drums/sax ensemble to back Emily’s lead. This offers the flexibility to hit those Dixie land style tunes but without needing an 8 piece band, or more difficult yet, a 15+ piece big band. And the best part is that if you need after dinner entertainment, we can become a dueling pianos show again and transition into the all request show when people are ready to start singing and dancing.
Since putting together this group, we’ve been able to play corporate events and weddings while modernizing a roaring 20’s theme. The concept works great, and with the dueling option to follow, F&F can definitely have all your bases covered. Want to hear more? Give us a call and ask for a quote!
