If you’d like a unique honeymoon experience that you’ll never forget, try Japan on for size. From their diverse culture and amazing scenery to their mountains and once in a lifetime experiences, you won’t find a more beautiful place to start your life together as husband and wife. Here are eight exciting considerations when planning a honeymoon in Japan.
- Visit an Onsen
A traditional onsen is a hot spring where you bathe nude with other visitors, but sometimes the term is used for other outdoor bathing facilities. The most beautiful of them all is Takama-ga-hara Onsen located in the Japanese Alps. It’s quite a hike up to it, but the stunning reward is absolutely worth it.
- Take a walk on the wild side
Japan has a myriad of native wildlife that can be enjoyed up close and personal. You can be entertained by the bathing snow monkeys in the Japanese Alps, visit a “cat café”, swim with sharks or experience bird watching like never before if you’re lucky enough to catch the red-crowned crane mating dance. - Explore the local flavor
Sometimes, the best part of visiting new countries is getting to try new cuisine. Japan is home to some unique food options that, should you be brave enough to try them, are actually quite delectable. Give cow’s stomach a shot, try some live shrimp or be brave and try Japan’s celebrated dish: fugu, which is delicately prepared blowfish. - Experience Japan’s culture
Take in a sumo wrestling tournament, enjoy a Kabuki performance, delve into the world of the iconic geishas, or enjoy one of the thousands of festivals Japan has yearly.Arguably the two best festivals to catch are the Nebuta Festival in August and the Snow Festival every winter.
- Go sightseeing
A lot of Asia’s most iconic sights come out of Japan. Head to Hakone National park to take in the awe-inspiring views of Mount Fuji or visit Kyoto and enjoy the most culturally rich city in Asia. Home to many temples, shrines and a palace, Kyoto is not only diverse, but gorgeous. Besides the beautiful architecture, you can enjoy the Zen rock garden as well geishas, lush gardens and bamboo groves. You can even explore the coast that got decimated by the 2011 tsunami to see how it’s being rebuilt. - Stay in a Love Hotel
Get the true honeymoon experience by staying in a Japanese love hotel, or “couples hotel.” Love hotels are short stay, boutique accommodations specifically designed with lovers in mind. They often have “theme rooms” like outer space, jungle or dungeon rooms and you often pay by the hour. They are much cleaner and well maintained than similar hotels stateside, so they are a must-try for your honeymoon! If that’s too risqué, you can experience a more authentic environment by staying at a Ryokan: a traditional Japanese inn. Most are very sparse and feature tatami-mats in the rooms as well as communal bathrooms, but it’s a great way to infuse culture into your honeymoon. - Visit in Spring
Japan’s glorious cherry blossom trees are in full bloom during the spring months, which is the most popular tourist season, by far. Visitors flock from far and wide to experience cherry blossom season. Join a hanami (a cherry blossom viewing party) to get the most of the experience.
- Get in some thrills
There are plenty of amusement parks throughout Japan that will give you high speed adrenaline rushes. But, don’t forget about the shinkansen: the high speed bullet train that reaches up to 320 km/hr! You can even get beautiful views of Mt. Fuji from the comfort of the train’s seats.
You can find a beach anywhere. If you are looking for something more culturally diverse, explore a country full of tradition, beauty and grace. You’ll come home feeling rested, rejuvenated and with memories to last a lifetime.
