(If you’re gonna lose an award to someone, lose it to Tim Minchin.)
In 2009 Karin worked as head lyricist, co-composer and musical director on Dumped – The Musical We’ve All Been Through for Theatre Tours Australia. She also worked as a musical theatre tutor at the National Theatre Drama School (2009-2014), as composer for St Martin’s Youth Theatre’s Complaints Choir (2009) and as arranger and conductor for The Choir Of Hard Knockers (2013). Karin worked as an improvised comedy singer with corporate improv comedy group The Crew, as an improv musician on the TV Show TheatreGames LIVE (C31) and co-created Set List: The Improvised Musical Phenomenon (2008) – a theatrical format in which a band creates songs from scratch live on stage – with Dan Walmsley, and Instant Order: Trial By Audience (2013) – a live improvised courtroom drama – with Scott Gooding and Rob Lloyd.
Karin is a proud supporter of the Melbourne Cabaret Festival, having created numerous shows for them, performed in their piano bar, and written and performed the song “Underground” for the festival’s TV documentary (2013).
Karin has been featured on ABC Radio, 3MBS and JoyFM, written for Beat Magazine and appeared on the TV shows Planet Nerd, The Breakfast Show and Rockwiz. She has sung comedy songs at The Arts Centre’s Cabaret Forum (2008) The Upfront showcase for female comedians at the Melbourne Comedy Festival (2009,) sharing the bill with luminaries like Hannah Gadsby. Her favourite project to date was the band she formed with her siblings The Von Muiznieks Family Singers – tight vocal harmony bluegrass covers of contemporary pop tunes.
Karin moved to the US in 2014 and put all that on hold to get married, raise a family and commence a career in dueling pianos. She has played every piano bar on Bourbon Street over the last eight years, and is known for her crystal clear vocals and sharp observational wit. She is currently working at Tickler’s on Bourbon Street. Karin is still writing comedy songs and sending them back to the Australian cabaret and burlesque scene, and she has just begun work on a new theatre script slated for debut in 2023.
