Outdoor festivals. The smell of corndogs and gasoline, the screams of delighted children on fair rides, good wholesome family time with loved ones, and cold beer after spending time with family! This year at Lake in the Hills’ Sunset Festival held in Sunset Park, Chris Heroldt and myself brought Felix and Fingers to their mainstage, and rocked the good ‘ol fashioned fair music stereotype!
The Sunset Festival is a volunteer-run outdoor free summer festival for the town of Lake of the Hills- Hold on, let me just articulate one part of that last statement, FREE. Food, games, rides, wine/beer tastings, and excellent music, all free and all volunteer run. It’s the best of small town america traditions from like, the 50’s, mixed with considerably more enjoyable rides and food, (namely beer) but still for free! We just couldn’t get over how much stuff was there to do, all provided by the town of Lake of the Hills and their sponsors.
One of the things that can be tough about dueling in so many varied locations is equipment set-up. You never know what kind of sound situation there will be at a given venue, and outdoor venues are some of the most difficult to prepare for. Luckily for us, the Sunset Festival spared no expense in hiring a top notch professional sound outlet to handle the mainstage.
Having to take out every cable and speaker and stand for every gig can get tiresome, and whenever someone walks up to you, shakes your hand and says, “Don’t worry about anything. We’ll get you all set up, just grab your piano.” you have to restrain the urge to hug them, and cry on their nice shirt. We did however bring our mini-shells to the festival, so we decided to use them, because they are super awesome.
Normally, when you book Felix and Fingers we perform what we call an All-Request All-the Time All-Dancing All-party show. Being elevated 5 ft from the grass led to challenges getting request slips, so instead of handing out request slips, we took shouted requests from the people in the audience, and picked on some teenagers, because any opportunity to make a teenager feel uncomfortable in public is an opportunity worth taking. Some great requests rolled in from the crowd, and we rocked and rolled through our whole set.
In just a few weeks, on October 24th, Sunset Park is hosting the first annual Pub in the Park! There will be 40+ breweries, Food trucks, and live music INCLUDING BOTH CHRIS AND I! Yes! You heard correctly! Felix and Fingers is rocking Lake of the Hills yet again in just a few weeks! If you’re a beer lover, music lover, or food lover, be there! If you’re not any of those things….I’m not sure we can be friends….
