Well… I shouldn’t say this was a surprise, because they knew we were coming. They just didn’t know exactly what to expect.
Now that my dueling piano experience has accumulated a very large number of weddings, I can say with confidence that it was visibly clear to Robert and myself that there was some initial uncertainty in the air. Not between the bride and groom. They had already developed a sense of confidence (perhaps) from our charming demeanor over the phone. Still, I’m sure that there was a slight uncertainty at first among some of the guests. Understandably so. There were several children present and there was a strong sense of Christianity. Would we scream and make obnoxious jokes? Would we invite people up to the stage and embarrass them in front of their friends and family.
Those are fair enough concerns. Lets face it, dueling pianos bars may have earned a bit of a reputations for being… uh, well… not so family friendly. But that is NOT our reputation. We work with many audiences, and do our best to understand exactly what kind of show would be most suitable for them.
It didn’t take long to earn their trust. They were ready to let loose in the most appropriate way – smiles, singing and lots of dancing. This group turned out to be one of the best audiences that we’ve performed for. The kids and the adults were all great, giving us equally good requests. In fact, just halfway through the show, one of the guests booked us for ANOTHER wedding! You can’t get a better testimonial than that.
You might be wondering how the chemistry was between all the children and the adults (and ourselves.) One thing that I have learned from performing (and from having kids of my own) is that kids have great taste in music – it’s usually better than the adults! I know what you are thinking, “What about ‘Let It Go?'” All I can say is that even that age group has finally put Frozen behind them and are now much more partial to “Uptown Funk.”
Now, we did have a theme song request for the 90’s cartoon, Gummi Bear. But it was not entirely certain if it came from the kids or the adults. We know what adults are capable of. It didn’t matter. What mattered was that we hammered it out and kept everyone dancing! If anything, the dancing only became more intense during that song. People like to let go of their adult personas and let loose like kids do. Everyone was truly enjoying the company of all and danced the entire night!
And how about the venue and staff at Abbey Station? I could be partial to approval simply because I live out in the same area, but I’m not. They get a big thumbs up, because they did a great job. The venue manager and staff were genuinely the friendliest group you could hope to work with. We got a great compliment from them at the end of the night. Aside from them telling us how well they enjoyed the music, we were also told that they had never seen any other band or DJ get everyone dancing like we did!
There is something to say for positive energy. And that night with that audience, it was running through everyone.
Oh! And did I mention that Robert knows the entire dance to Thriller? Gotta love October weddings!
